Belambi Teacher Furthers Children's Education

In the village of Belambai, which lies within Panjwa'i district, the Ministry of Education achieved success in the past two months by opening a new local school and hiring a teacher, Azad Khan.

At the end of December during the coldest time of year in Kandahar, the Azad Khan handed out winter clothing and furnished his school with rugs provided by assistance of Spirit of America donors. Azad Khan wanted to increase visibility of the new school and encourage local villagers to send their children to school. He also hoped to reward those children who have had committed attendance. The Civil Affairs team leader who helped coordinate this program told me that "Azad Kahn teaches class Saturday through Thursday from 8am to 12pm and the subjects include reading, writing and basic arithmetic. The age groups of the children range from 4 to 10."

Further, Azad Khan said that word of the new school is spreading and that he expects larger numbers of attendance in the near future. Having effective teachers in suitable schools encourages the spread of education and in turn strengthens village and district governance.

Thank you for your generosity in helping a new school within a key district. Ultimately, this helps US troops accomplish their mission of strengthening local and district government.
