Article on Influence of Arab Blogs

World Politics Watch posted an article today entitled "Blogging the New Arab Public: Arab Blogs' Political Influence Will Grow" which gives a good overview of the different genres of Arabic blogs and their increasing cultural and political influence in Arab countries.    It's an informative read and mentions both SoA and our support of the Arabic Blogging Tool-Viral Freedom project and Iraq the Model, our partners in helping to develop and disseminate that unique hosting platform.

"Arab political blogging is changing and becoming more politically relevant. Arab blogs remain a very small, if rapidly growing, phenomenon -- there are perhaps a few thousand political blogs across the region. Still, Internet use and blogging are growing fast, and Internet access seems nearly universal among politically mobilized youth in certain Arab countries. Even if expectations that a few courageous blogs could shatter the wall of fear sustaining brittle Arab states have been overblown, blogs increasingly do matter."--excerpt from "Blogging the New Arab Public: Arab Blogs' Political Influence Will Grow" as published by World Politics Watch

Committee to Protect Bloggers

From Jeff Jarvis at Buzzmachine writes about The Committee to Protect Bloggers:

"The Committee to Protect Bloggers is urging support from all bloggers on Feb. 22 -- today -- to bring international attention to the plight of two bloggers, Arash Sigarchi and Mojtaba Saminejad, jailed in Iran. Here's a BBC story.
I first discovered the Iranian blog culture when its Johnny Appleseed, Hossein Derakhshan, reported on the arrest of blogger Sina Motallebi. We blogged about that and brought international attention to the story and Sina credits that with helping to get him out of jail and out of the country.
These people are in jail for doing exactly what we have the privilege of doing: Speaking. We must stand with them."

Spirit of America supports free expression and free media. Some of our most important projects are in this area with support for television stations in Al Anbar, Iraq and the development of an Arabic blogging tool in use by Friends of Democracy and other voices for progress in the Arab world.

Please visit, and link to, the Committee to Protect Bloggers.
