Shoes for Afghan Children

Help Army battalion provide footwear to 5,000 Afghan kids
2011 Afghanistan_Army_Lowe_Arghandab_Shoes_1-1

Villagers in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan have seen decades of conflict, and the new generation of children face austere conditions and an uncertain future. This region is one of the most undeveloped in Afghanistan and agriculture is the primary way of life.

The temperatures vary from extreme heat in summer to below freezing in winter. Resources and access to basic necessities, such as shoes and clothing, are often scarce so a small thing like a pair of shoes can make a big difference for the quality of life for village children who often travel long distances to herd cattle or attend school.

Army Second Lieutenant (2LT) Jake Lowe and the unit he is serving want to help make a difference for these children by providing one pair of shoes for all of the estimated 5,000 children in the area.

2LT Lowe writes, "We specifically are seeking children's sandals to be distributed to the children in the valley. Most of the roads here are unpaved, and the vast majority of the children here are shoe-less. With this program in place we will be greatly aided in fulfilling our mission, assistance will be available to children who face extraordinary challenges, and it would be tangible example of the America's values of freedom and peace."

"Our Battalion Commander has spoken very favorably of the outreach that Spirit of America can, and does, accomplish which is why he recommended your organization as point of contact for assistance. [We] would like to coordinate a shoes drive this summer with your organization. We specifically are seeking children's sandals to be distributed to the children in the valley. Most of the roads here are unpaved, and the vast majority of the children here are shoe-less."

A young boy with his new shoes.

I am a Battalion Information Operations Officer currently deployed in Afghanistan. [Our battalion] is set to take over authority for a portion of the Arghandab River Valley...These folks have seen decades of conflict, and the new generation of children face austere conditions and an uncertain future. [We] partnered with... the Afghan National Army as well as the local Afghan government leaders to begin a program to distribute community assistance kits to the local families and we would like to ask for your help. Our Battalion Commander has spoken very favorably of the outreach that Spirit of America can, and does, accomplish which is why he recommended your organization as point of contact for assistance.
