Major David Gaitonde Helping Midwives in Afghanistan

Support a Midwives Training Center in Paktya Province

Reports in recent years have placed Afghanistan's infant mortality rate among the highest in the world. Studies cite illiteracy, poverty, malnutrition, poor hygiene and a crippled health-care system as contributing factors to the high death rate for both infants and mothers shortly after or during birth. One way to combat this troubling situation in Afghanistan is to equip midwives to provide local care and education to Afghan women. Army Major David Gaitonde requests your help in providing supplies to a Midwife Training Center offering a 2 year program in Paktya Province. With your support of this project, Spirit of America will provide the tools for the graduating trainees to help Afghan women and families.

Information on the Midwife Training Center program
Major Gaitonde wrote that "the Midwife Training Center is...a 2-year program and the ladies do it voluntarily. They do not get a stipend while in the program...They requested some equipment and I have exhausted all of the local channels without finding someone to provide these items...The school would like stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs for each student (currently 27) that they can take with them when they graduate.
I think that is great because these women cannot afford to buy these two items on their own and they are a necessity. We will also provide a digital thermometer and delivery kit to each of them...I really believe we can do some good here..."
